Good evening mamas!
If there is anything I hate more, it is that I started 2017 with a messy, messy house. And messy is the nicest word I could come up with because wreck, hurricane, disaster probably describes it better. In our home we do not have a “living area” per say. We have a kitchen that opens up to what would be our living/family room so we opted for doing a bar counter with bar stools and called it a day. The downside is- my counter ends up being the dumping grounds for literally EVERYTHING. When the kids fight over a toy and I come in the save or in their heads, ruin the day I take it away and it goes right on the counter along with my purse, keys, tupperware, bills and all sorts of random knick knacks.
Just two nights ago my husband came home and by the look on my face I think he knew I had about enough. Luckily, he came home with a bottle of wine, we put the beds to sleep, and I took a long shower, put on a face mask and prayed that night with my wine in hand that God would give me some sort of sign as to where to even begin or at least some patience. The next morning I said “Babe, I need to get a grip because I feel like I am losing it.” And he replied, “Make a list!” Of course, even this seemed impossible to me because I am always jotting down ideas for blog posts, things to buy, groceries etc. and nothing. I still end up a hot mess. But, some how that morning was different, I left the baby in the crib, turned on the monitor, and my daughter in her bed and put a movie on in their room. I went straight to the kitchen and jumped on my phone and naturally went to pinterest for kitchen ideas. Apparently, the Lord heard my prayers because I stumbled across A Bowl Full of Lemons and drank my coffee and realized there was SILENCE in my house. If you know my kids, you know silence is rare over here.
Which brings to me to the fun stuff! Thanks to her site, I actually had an answer to my prayer ” WHERE DO I BEGIN?” !!
Again, this photo is credit to her site linked above so PLEASE go check it out because she deserves ALL the credit. I am only sharing my experience and what I was able to tackle in just a day ( though, I recommend you take the week like she lays it out because it is overwhelming but, I was determined to catch up to the schedule). I do hope that you join me and we can tag each other with our progress using her tag #abfolchallenge and #mbgblogchallenge ! Here is the plan she has laid out on her site but, I will link it for convenience 2017 Home Organization Schedule. Her guide gives the perfect step by step process in how to get each area in your home in tip top shape!
** I little disclaimer: the plan has really good suggestions of items to buy to organize but, it just isn’t in our budget to be buying things but, I plan to incorporate these sometime in the future. So if you’re scared away by this don’t be because I accomplished all the tasks with working with what I had on hand.**
(Before this picture, I had a PILE of dishes in this thing. I was too excited so sometimes I would forget to even take the before picture. But, take my word… This sink gave the Smokey Mountains a little competition.)
Medicine Cabinet: Before
Here I took a cake stand that I already had stored in this cabinet but, through out expired medicine and got to organizing all the bottles in one place. This made is easier for me to just rotate the stand when I am looking for a particular medicine. On top I have I my seasonal Christmas Rae Dunn pieces and the middle level has some serving stands for entertaining with another seasonal item that I just couldn’t fit at the top if not, thats exactly where it would’ve gone. But I’ll take what I can get.
Under the Stovetop:
Here I already had these plastic bins but the onions were still in the grocery sack and same goes for the sweet potatoes. Removing the netting it came in made all the difference in this drawer. This was probably the easiest area for me to tackle.
Last drawer under the stovetop:
This is where all the pots and pans are. This is a drawer I hope to have a little better in the future considering all my pots and pans are mismatched and I am trying to save up for my dream set. But I leave all the lids off because majority of the time the things we cook don’t really need them. And those black mixing bowls should actually be under the oven area but, I have yet to tackle that area. (Pantry is week 2 it’s in the works!)
What worked for me here was to transfer all my spices into small mason jars and label them with my label maker. I had a ton of jars on hand from my kids baby showers so it was a win win situation to put them to good use! I also took my large size mason jars and transferred my oils as well. I just need more spouts for a seamless pouring option. You will also see how I took my daughters favorite chocolate powder and put into an inspired vintage milk jar. This helped me eliminate not so appealing packaging and made my cabinets look cohesive.
In my case I have two areas with lazy susans. I have one on each side of my sink. The one to the right houses all our tupperware and what used to be our small deep fryer. FYI don’t do what I did and get lazy and put your deep fryer away with oil. DONT DO IT! You’ll see the bottom area looks pretty dirty because I have to scrub off all the yellow oil that was stuck down there. I also elicited 90% of our plastic tupperware and only kept the glass ones. This has been something we have been transitioning to, because my husband seems to have an obsession with buying plastic tupperware or saving the ones from restaurants and it drives me insane. So I only kept the new small ones until I replace them.
Before: (Other Lazy Susan)
Here I cleaned out all the drawers, expired food, or food sitting in tupperware we were too lazy to wash. This was a great motivation for actually seeing the types of food we were purchasing and as a family we are going to try REAL hard to eat healthier. I feel like this process gave us the clean slate we needed.
Before: Dirty Drawers & Fridge
